Minecraft Survival Guide: Season 1, Episode 1 - Your First Day!
Hey guys! Welcome to the ultimate Minecraft Survival Guide, Season 1! In this first episode, we're going to dive headfirst into the blocky world and get you prepped for your very first day. Forget everything you think you know (unless you're already a pro, then just nod along), because we're starting from scratch. Our mission? To not only survive the night but to thrive and lay the foundation for an epic Minecraft journey.
Getting Started: Punching Trees & Basic Tools
Okay, so you've spawned into a brand new world. What's the first thing you should do? Punch a tree, obviously! I know, it sounds ridiculous, but trust me. You need wood, and you need it fast. Start by repeatedly left-clicking on any tree trunk until you break a block of wood. Collect that block, and keep punching until you have at least 5-6 blocks of wood. This is your foundation, your bedrock (pun intended!) for everything that comes next.
Why wood, you ask? Well, wood can be crafted into planks, and planks can be crafted into a crafting table. This crafting table is your gateway to creating almost everything in the game. Open your inventory (usually by pressing 'E'), and you'll see the wood you collected. Place the wood in the crafting grid, and it will turn into wood planks. Take those planks and fill every slot in the crafting grid. Voila! You now have a crafting table. Place that crafting table on the ground – just right-click on the ground while holding it. Now, right-click on the crafting table to open its interface.
With your crafting table ready, it's time to make some basic tools. Start by crafting sticks. Place two planks on top of each other in the crafting grid, and you'll get sticks. Next, craft a wooden pickaxe. This requires two sticks and three wood planks. Arrange them in the crafting table in the shape of a pickaxe – sticks in the bottom middle, and planks across the top row. A wooden pickaxe allows you to mine stone, which is significantly more durable than wood and essential for progressing. After the wooden pickaxe, craft a wooden axe using the same stick placement, but with the planks forming an axe head. This will speed up your wood collecting.
Finding Food: The Key to Survival
Alright, now that we have our basic tools, it's time to think about food. Your hunger bar is constantly depleting, and if it empties completely, you'll start losing health. That's bad. So, let's find something to eat. The easiest food source early game is animals. Look around for pigs, cows, or chickens. Using your newly crafted axe or pickaxe (or even your bare hands if you're desperate), hunt these animals. Each animal will drop raw meat when killed. Don't eat the raw meat just yet! Raw meat has a chance of giving you food poisoning, which will make you even hungrier.
Once you've gathered some raw meat, you'll need to cook it. To do this, you need a furnace. But to make a furnace, you need stone. Remember that wooden pickaxe you crafted? Time to put it to use! Find a stone deposit – usually found on the sides of hills or underground. Mine at least eight pieces of cobblestone. Open your crafting table and arrange the cobblestone around the edges, leaving the center square empty. This will create a furnace. Place the furnace on the ground and right-click on it to open its interface.
To fuel the furnace, you'll need fuel. The easiest early-game fuel source is wood. Place your raw meat in the top slot of the furnace and wood in the bottom slot. Wait for the furnace to do its thing, and bam! You now have cooked meat. Cooked meat restores significantly more hunger than raw meat and doesn't give you food poisoning. Congratulations, you've secured your first reliable food source!
Building a Shelter: Surviving the Night
Okay, the sun is starting to set, and you know what that means – monsters are coming. Creepers, zombies, skeletons, and spiders will all spawn in the darkness and try to ruin your day (or rather, your night). So, we need to build a shelter, and we need to build it fast. The simplest shelter is a dirt hut. Just dig up some dirt blocks and stack them into a small, enclosed space with a roof. It doesn't have to be pretty; it just has to keep the monsters out.
However, a dirt hut is only a temporary solution. A better option is to build a small house out of wood or cobblestone. Since you already have some cobblestone from making your furnace, let's use that. Find a relatively flat area and build a small structure – something like 5x5 blocks should be sufficient for now. Make sure to include walls and a roof. Leave a space for a door and a few windows (you can just leave holes in the wall for now). This will be your safe haven for the night.
Once you have the basic structure, craft a door using wood planks. Place the door in the doorway to prevent monsters from entering. It's also a good idea to craft a bed. A bed requires three wool blocks and three wood planks. Place the planks across the bottom row of the crafting table and the wool across the middle row. Sheep are the primary source of wool, so you might have to hunt a few down. Right-clicking on the bed inside your shelter will set your spawn point, meaning if you die, you'll respawn in your bed. This is incredibly useful and saves you from having to walk all the way back to your shelter every time you meet an untimely end.
Mining for Resources: Stone Tools & Beyond
Now that you have a safe place to sleep, it's time to start thinking about upgrading your tools. Stone tools are significantly more durable and efficient than wooden tools, and they're relatively easy to obtain. Head back to your stone deposit and mine a bunch more cobblestone. You'll need enough to craft a stone pickaxe, a stone axe, and a stone sword. The crafting recipes are the same as the wooden tools, but using cobblestone instead of wood planks.
A stone pickaxe will allow you to mine even more valuable resources, such as coal. Coal is essential for smelting ore and for making torches. Torches provide light, which is crucial for preventing monsters from spawning inside your shelter. To craft torches, combine coal and sticks in the crafting table – one coal on top of one stick. Place torches around your shelter to light it up and keep it monster-free.
With your stone tools and torches in hand, you're ready to start exploring the underground. Dig a staircase down into the earth, being careful not to fall into any unexpected caves or lava pools. As you explore, keep an eye out for iron ore. Iron ore is a reddish-brown color and is typically found in veins. Mine the iron ore with your stone pickaxe and bring it back to your furnace. Smelt the iron ore using coal as fuel to create iron ingots. Iron ingots can be used to craft iron tools and armor, which are a significant upgrade from stone.
Surviving the First Night: A Recap
Congratulations! You've made it through your first day in Minecraft. Let's recap what we've accomplished:
